With the disintegration of joint family system in our society a large number of aged persons have to take up shelter in homes for the aged people in Nuclear families live in small houses in the cities. Sometimes they themselves are unwilling to keep them at home. The relatives too don't offer a place to live to the aged. The number of those seeking admission in home for the aged has been on the rise in all parts of the country. Though there is a significant difference in the number of those seeking admission to the old age homes from urban areas to those in the rural areas, the fact remains that traditional refuge centre for the aged 'home' are no longer available as a residence for them specially in urban areas. When health economic status and other conditions make it impossible for the age to continue providing 'support to their family, they are considered unwanted' and thrown away by children and other close kin's with the increase in life expectancy, the number of people living above the age of 65 has been steadily increasing. When traditional sources of support fail, the obligations of any society demands alternative setting to take care of the neglected elderly citizens. Day Care established by governmental and non-governmental agencies are struggling to provide them with adequate facilities so that they can lead a life of dignity till they breathe their last.
However the existing facilities are grossly inadequate both in number and quality to take care of the increasing demands of a significant portion of the population Going by the trend of increasing population of the age in our country, one can rightly conclude that more institutional facilities have to be established in the near future so that the neglected elderly citizens get sufficient living arrangements. The purpose of the above said SHELTER HOME is to give shelter to the aged persons who are in distress and have nobody to take care of them. At present 50 inmates reside in the shelter home. The old age home of the Mahila Utkarsh Sansthan received fund by the Ministry of Social Justice, New Delhi in 2002-2003.
The shelter home provides facilities like fooding, lodging, clothing and health care to the old age persons.
